Iran Seeks Agreement with Oman to Ensure Safe Passage Through Strait of Hormuz

Iran is seeking to reach an agreement with Oman to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, as efforts continue to ease tensions in one of the world’s most strategically important shipping routes.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said discussions with Oman are focused on establishing a temporary arrangement to facilitate maritime navigation through the waterway. The talks come amid ongoing regional security concerns that have disrupted commercial shipping and raised global energy market anxieties.

Oman plays key mediation role

Oman has long served as a neutral mediator in regional diplomacy and is facilitating discussions aimed at reducing tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

Baghaei said the proposed arrangement is intended to ensure the safe movement of vessels through the strategic waterway, although he stressed that broader political and security issues remain unresolved.

Strategic waterway

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints, linking the Arabian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. A significant share of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas exports passes through the narrow waterway each day, making its security critical to international energy markets.
